Legendary cricketer Shane Warne died last week at the age of just 52 years and the autopsy conducted by Thai police revealed natural causes. However, the spin master was on an extreme liquid diet as he planned to shred muscle and get into shape.
Warne, sharing a picture, had in a tweet said, “Operation shred has started (10 days in) & the goal by July is to get back to this shape from a few years ago! Let’s go.” The cricketing genius was on a liquid diet, the same he had successfully conducted in the past as well.
At the time of his death, Warne was on a personal trip to Thailand. His family had said in a statement that Warne died due to a suspected heart attack after he was found unconscious at a villa in Thailand. Warne’s long-time manager James Erskine had said the leg-spinner was on a diet plan as he was looking to shed weight and regain full fitness.
WHAT WAS WARNE’S LIQUID DIET?
According to Shane Warne’s manager, he was on a 14-day liquid diet which consisted of just liquids and no food. According to reports, Warne was sweating out of usual in the week leading up to his demise.
These liquid diets are aimed at making a calorie deficit in the body forcing it to consume the excess fat and reduce weight.
“He did go on these ridiculous sorts of diets and he just finished one, where he basically only ate fluids for 14 days and he’d done these three or four times,” news.com.au quoted Erskine as saying.

‘”It was a bit all or nothing. It was either white buns with butter and lasagne stuffed in the middle or he would be having black and green juices. He obviously smoked most of his life. I don’t know; I think it was just a massive heart attack. That’s what I think has happened,” Erskine added.
Shane Warne had battled with weight issues over the years and had repeatedly denied taking any weight-loss supplements.
HOW DO LIQUID DIETS AFFECT THE BODY?
Liquid diets largely consist of juices aimed at enriching minerals and vitamins and cutting down on proteins and fats. It also does not have any fibre. However, experts say that a diet that does not have a balance of all nutrients is not effective in the long term. Over dieting could lead to anaemia in women, depleted muscle mass, and force organs to work harder than normal.
According to BBC, several side effects of a liquid diet include headaches, dizziness, extreme tiredness, diarrhoea or constipation. Health experts instead recommend a varied and balanced diet, including lots of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds, plus finding ways to be active throughout the day.
The spin wizard had earlier also revealed that he was put on a ventilator after he was diagnosed with Covid-19. Warne had tested positive for the coronavirus in August last year even after being double vaccinated. “It wasn’t because I could not breathe, or anything like that, it was basically a special ventilator that I was trialing to make sure there were no longer-lasting effects that Covid would have on me,” Warne had said.
