Manipur journalists staged a protest against harassment by a militant organisation over the dissemination of news on Wednesday. The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM), and Manipur Hill Journalists’ Union organised the sit-in protest together (MHJU).
There were other organisations over the publication of a news item. Media outlets in the state, including print and electronic media, have suspended the publication and broadcast of news since Monday.
On Wednesday afternoon, the organisers also called a joint meeting with Manipur’s civil society organisations at the Manipur Press Club’s facilities.
The combined meeting decided that the journalists would resume their regular jobs as of Thursday, in addition to pleading with participants not to interfere with the press’s right to freedom of expression.
